Gray: The New Neutral

Move over, Beige! There’s a new kid in town … and her name is Gray. This isn’t the fictional character, Christian Grey, from the New York Times bestseller list, but a classy newcomer to the decor circuit that is a dream to work with and oozes with sophistication.

Gray is the new neutral for 2012 and 2013. You will be seeing it everywhere you look from fashion to automobiles to decor. With the varying shades and the ability to dress it up or down, it’s much more versatile than most other neutrals because you can pair it with any color – including itself!

If you are looking for recommendations on paint colors, here are some shades that we recommend:

Gray on gray is a great option if you love an upscale, plush look. Pair the color with itself and corresponding metals to really max out the luxury in your space.

We love gray in the homes of our clients, because you can change you look quickly and inexpensively. Plus, you can add pops of color for a “wow” that looks like a million bucks! Our favorite colors paired with gray for impact are yellow, red, orange, and turquoise.

Check out this bedroom that we did recently:

The yellow is fabulous against these light grey walls and bedding. If you later grew tired of the boldness, you are only out the cost of replacing these few items. (All but the fabric could actually be spray painted in another shade if you just wanted a color change!)

The fashion world is completely abuzz with the color “tangerine”. It is on every runway from New York to London, and you can guarantee that it will be on shelves at your favorite home decor store. It’s a high-impact color and a little goes a long way. If you want to leave an impression, but are low on funds – orange is a good option.

We also love turquoise and how much it is complimented by any shade of gray – light or dark. It is gorgeous on accessories and is a classic color. If your style tends to be traditional or if you love antiques, you can find a lot of items in this color. Mid-century modern enthusiasts will also find themselves lucky with turquoise. Bold or toned-down, it works.

When it’s time to pick a neutral base in your home, we at Fresh Perspectives urge you to consider gray. Use the shades that we’ve recommended or try your own! Throw in some bits of color through your accessories to liven it up and enjoy the instant beauty that is created in your space. It’s a great investment and sure to be a hit for seasons to come!
